10 easy and healthy school lunch ideas for kids

 School-going kids spend a lot of time in school, where they study, play, and perform a lot of physical and mental activities. Therefore, packing a healthy and nutritious lunch for them is essential. The lunch box must contain a variety of food groups such as fruits, whole grains, and dairy, along with water or fresh juice to keep them hydrated. Our main aim for the lunch box is to make it nutritious, colourful, and exciting so that kids finish their lunch happily.

Importance of packing lunch boxes for school kids

Proper Nutrition

School-going kids need proper and complete nutrition as their body and brain are developing and they perform a lot of physical and mental tasks.
To ensure their good performance in physical activities and study, their bodies must obtain a proper and complete diet. Lunch is the main meal of the day, and children are at school at the time of eating lunch. To maintain their energy and to ensure that they have a balanced diet, mothers' prefer to pack lunch for their children.

Concentration in study

Research has proven that a balanced diet enhances brain development and learning ability. So, the concentration of a child and his learning ability can be improved by providing him with a complete and balanced diet.

Energy

Children do a lot of physical activities, not only at home but also at school during lunch time. It is very important to provide them with a proper, homemade lunch that provides them with energy and stamina.

Exposure to different foods

By packing a different lunch each day for school, we can introduce the children to different food groups and a healthy diet. Children also stay away from junk and fast food available in the school cafeteria when they have delicious home-made food.

Lunch box ideas for kids

A sandwich is the most common lunch. But children are fed up with sandwiches now. We will see what other options for lunch we have that are healthy as well.

1. Quick and healthy pizza

Ingredients

  • Pita bread
  • Cheese
  • Homemade tomato sauce
  • Olives
  • Mushrooms
  • Boiled chicken
  • Bell pepper
  • Tomato

Recipe

  • Spread home-made tomato sauce on pita bread.
  • Add all the ingredients and put in the microwave till the cheese melts (since all the vegetables are already cooked or boiled).
  • Pack it in the lunch box. Kids will love it.

2. Chicken wrap

Ingredients

  • Pita bread
  • Chicken
  • Cabbage
  • Cucumber
  • Cheese
  • Homemade tomato sauce
  • (For chicken merination) yoghurt, lemon juice, salt, pepper, ginger garlic paste

Recipe

Merinate the chicken with yoghurt, lemon juice, ginger-garlic paste, salt, and pepper.
Spread tomato sauce on pita bread along with crushed cabbage and cucumber. Add cheese and wrap it in butter paper.
Note: You can customise it according to your kids preferences.

3. Chickpea flour tortilla (baisen ki roti)

Ingredients

  • Chickpea flour (1 cup)
  • Onion (finely chopped)
  • Salt and pepper (according to taste)
  • Fresh coriander
  • Egg

Recipe

Take some chickpea flour. Mix salt and pepper in it, along with onions. Add some water and mix thoroughly. Then add the egg and mix. The mixture should be little runny.
Take a fry pan. Greet it with butter and pour the batter. When the bubbles start appearing, flip the side. Cook on a low flame.
Pack it with yoghurt or tomato sauce.

4. Wheat flour tortilla with eggs

Ingredients

  • Wheat flour (1 cup)
  • Egg 
  • Salt 
  • Pepper
  • Fresh coriander
  • Onion (finely chopped)

Recipe

Take the wheat flour in a mixing bowl. Add some water, salt, and pepper (according to taste). Add the egg and mix it. Bake it in a fry pan, just like a simple tortilla.
It's a delicious and healthy meal. Serve it with tomato sauce or peanut butter.

5. Rainbow tortilla wrap

Ingredients

  • Carrot
  • Capsicum
  • Tomato
  • Potatoes (boiled)
  • Humus or cream cheese
  • Boiled chicken (shredded)
  • Cheese
  • Tortilla

Recipe

Spread hummus or cream cheese on the tortilla. Arrange different-coloured vegetables and chicken on it. Add some cheese. Wrap the tortilla. Cut it into smaller sizes.

6. Mini vegetable frittatas

Ingredients

  • 1 Egg
  • 1 cup of milk
  • Cheese
  • 1 Capsicum
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Onion
  • Basil
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Recipe

Preheat the oven. Mix the egg, milk, salt, and pepper in a mixing bowl. Add the rest of the vegetables and cheese, and mix well. Bake it for 15–20 minutes.
Note: You can use a muffin tin for baking.

7. Greek yoghurt parfarit

Ingredients

  • Greek yoghurt
  • Strawberries
  • Honey
  • Nuts
  • Granola

Recipe

Take a container. Set a layer of yoghurt at the bottom. Arrange strawberries on top, then again add yoghurt. Now, add granola. Repeat until the container is full. Add a layer of nuts at the top.

8. Mini Quiches

Ingredients

  • Pita bread
  • Egg
  • Chopped spinach
  • Chopped capsicum
  • Chopped mushrooms
  • Sausages
  • Cheese

Recipe

Beat the eggs. Add vegetables, sausages, and cheese, and mix them well.
Open the pocket of pita bread. Pour the mixture and bake it in the preheated oven for 10–15 minutes.

9. Dipper Box

If your child is a fan of raw vegetables and fruits, you can slice raw vegetables like capsicum, cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes, and boiled potatoes in stock form. You can pack hummus or tomato sauce to dip the vegetables in. Complete the lunch box with some fruit slices.

10. Fruits and cheese

Take skewers and add freshly cut fruits to them, then add a cube of cheese. These alternate cubes of fresh fruits and cheese are not only very nutritious but tasty as well.
